Four defendants arrested. Tabachum dead in box.
A student named Mahi Umme Tabachum (8), who came to Tafsirul Quran Mahfil in Bogra’s Dhunat Upazila for revenge, was strangled to death after being gang-raped on a local university grounds out of greed to buy nuts. After arresting the four defendants involved in the incident, they confessed to the police for organized rape and murder during questioning. Bogra Police Superintendent Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan confirmed the information in a press release on Saturday afternoon.
Those arrested are Bappi Ahmed, 22, son of Tozammel Haque from Nasratpur village in Chowkibari, union of the Upazila, Kamal Pasha, 34, son of Dalil Uddin Talukder, Shamim Reza, 22, son of Sanwar Hossain and Lablu Sheikh, 21 , son of Saheb Ali. The deceased was identified as Mahi Umme Tabachum, daughter of Belal Hossain Khokon from Nasratpur village and a second-class student at the Panchthupi-Nasratpur government primary school.
According to the defendant, Belal Hossain Khokon, the father of the murdered Tabachum, tried to abuse Bappi Ahmed’s own sister and cousin about five years ago. At that time these incidents were resolved locally. But since then, the drunkenness of revenge has taken hold of Bappi’s head. As planned, Bappi and his associates took Tabachhum to the nearby Haji Kazem Jobeda Technical College field on December 14 to buy walnuts for Tabachum in the Waz Mahfil area. There, after the gang rape, they suffocated Tabachum, cut off his fingers and toes, and dumped his naked body in a bamboo grove.
Sources in the case said that people from the cemetery committee organized a two-day Tafsirul Koran mahfil at Jannatul Ferdous cemetery in Nasratpur village of upazila. On the first day, on the night of December 14, Tabachum went to Tafsir Mahfil with his grandparents. There he sat in front of the stage with his grandparents and listened to the tafsir mahfil. Around 10 p.m. that night, the boy left the stage to buy 10 rupees tokens from his grandfather and disappeared.
After much searching, the boy’s body was found naked inside a bamboo bush about 200 meters from the Tafsir mahfil site around 1 am. Her clothes were next to the schoolgirl’s body. Belal Hossain Khokon, Tabachum’s father, who died in the incident on December 15, presented a murder case at the Dhunat police station. But in that case no defendant’s name was mentioned.
Police arrested Bappi Ahmed, Kamal Pasha, Shamim Reza and Lablu from Nasratpur village on Friday night. During interrogation, they confessed to killing Tabachum after the gang rape. The accused have been sent to the Bogra court.
