ল The distribution companies will cancel the sight promissory notes issued and reimburse the money deposited to customers.

The government has decided to permanently cut natural gas connections through pipelines to homes. As a result, the hopes of all customers who have been waiting for the residential gas connection for a long time are going to be shattered. Even requests from clients who have issued demand notes and deposited money will be rejected. The relevant distribution companies will refund your money.

The government’s energy department notified gas distribution companies of the decision on Thursday and ordered them to implement it. According to distribution companies, the number of customers issuing demand notes for new connections and paying the required fees is around two and a half lakhs. An official from Petrobangla, a leading company in the gas and mineral resources sector, said that the number of clients in this category will be around 6 lakh through various legal and illegal means. The official said that nearly all of the customers who issued demand notes and deposited money were using gas illegally. Local officials and distribution company contractors have illegally connected gas to these houses and are also collecting monthly bills every month. The theft of this gas due to ineffective management is wasting national resources. Gas lines are breaking down at different times. Also, the state is deprived of a large amount of revenue.

Ali Iqbal, Managing Director (MD) of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, the largest gas distributor in the country. Nurullah said: ‘I received a letter from the ministry on Thursday. Gas will no longer be provided in homes. The names of the clients who requested the connection and deposited money are in our database. We will hold a meeting on Sunday to develop a roadmap to implement the government’s decision. Arrangements will be made to refund money by posting a notification or contacting customers in any other way. In response to a question, he said that customers will not accept the new decision. But I have to agree. They will be informed of the government’s decision.

Other gas distribution companies in the country include Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company, Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, Western Gas Company and Sundarbans Gas Company. Officials from these agencies also said they would meet next Sunday or Monday to work out a framework to implement the government’s decision.

Meanwhile, it is claimed that two classes of consumers will suffer the most from this government decision. One of them is the owners of houses and flats in different cities, including Dhaka. Another is housing companies. Many of them have promised their clients a pipeline. Now they think that sales will decrease if they don’t get that connection. Especially after the start of the LNG import in 2016, the long-closed gas connection was heard to resume in policymaking circles. At that time, the unions increased the number of illegal connections in different districts, including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj and Gazipur. They assure customers that they will legalize gas connections in a few days. But now is the time to disconnect all illegal connections, these clients will also be cut off.

An energy department official said the illegal gas connection will not be stopped in any way. Some circles force people to take illegal connections by showing various temptations. Once again, many clients also took illegal connections through various lobbying efforts. Now that residential connections are permanently closed, many new illegal connections will be stopped.

Anisur Rahman, chief secretary of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the eviction campaign will continue until all illegal gas connections are disconnected. The situation is no longer conducive to providing new connections to residents. So the clients were given a clear decision without clinging to their hopes.
