Own report: Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to the Nobel Prize-winning economist this time at the debate on ‘Pratichi’ at Amartya Sen’s home in Santiniketan. He did not mention BJP in the letter. However, Mamata’s target is Gerua Shibir. Amartya Sen has come under fire for speaking out against the BJP and the Sangh family, Mamata explained in a letter. He wrote: ‘Some outsiders from Visva-Bharati are making baseless and bizarre accusations about their family’s property. It hurted me. You are fighting against the orthodoxy of the majority across the country. Then the forces of evil have become your enemy. I’m by your side in this fight. ‘

A section of Visva-Bharati has complained that part of the land of Amartya Sen’s house belongs to the university. The West Bengal government has also received a charge sheet. At a press conference on Thursday, Mamata Banerjee said: ‘The people of Bengal are proud of Amartya Sen. You think Amartya Sen will occupy the land of Santiniketan! His family has been there for 60-70 years. Those who say, how much do you know Bengali? Amartya Sen is ideologically opposed to the BJP, claiming occupation of houses in his name and installation of street vendors. It will not be tolerated by the people of Bengal. I apologize to Amartya Sen. ‘

In a letter to Amartya Sen the same day, Mamata Banerjee wrote: ‘Everyone knows of your family’s deep connection to Santiniketan. His father Ashutosh Sen built the western house in Santiniketan 6 decades ago. Now some outsiders from Visva-Bharati are making unsubstantiated and surprising complaints about their family’s property. It hurted me. You are fighting against the orthodoxy of the majority. By doing so, you have become an enemy of the forces of evil. I am by your side in this fight. I accompany you as your sister and friend in the fight against intolerance and dictatorship. Don’t succumb to their false accusations and false attacks. We will win. ‘

Mamata Banerjee has also called on Bengali intellectuals to support Amartya Sen and protest. On Thursday, he announced that Amartya Sen, Rabindranath and Vidyasagar would speak out against disrespect at the Bolpur procession.
