Four leaders, including two BNP council candidates, have been accused of taking money from the Awami League council candidates to withdraw from the upcoming elections in the Santahar municipality of Adamdighi upazila in Bogra.
The Awami League candidate is becoming a councilman without competition. The incident has caused outrage among BNP leaders and activists and its affiliates.
In this incident, the municipal BNP of Santahar has made a written recommendation to the district committee to expel them from their organization. Deputy Golam Mohammad Siraj, the district’s BNP convener, and the joint convener, defender AKM Saiful Islam, protested on Thursday.
The four defendants are Zahidul Islam, a member of the convening committee of the municipal BNP of Santahar and Mahamudul Alam, a member of the Juba Dal Municipal, Mamunur Rashid, a former president of the Juba Dal Municipal and Mahfuzul Haque, a member of the convening committee of the BNP Adamdighi Upazila.
It has been mentioned in the letter signed by the convener of the BNP Municipal Santahar, Mojibur Rahman, and the joint convener Rafiqul Islam, that the election of the municipality of Santahar will take place on January 18 in the second phase by the EVM system. BNP municipal leader Zahidul Islam and Juba Dal municipal leader Mahamudul Alam gathered the party’s nomination documents to compete for the position of councilor in district no.
Abdul Quddus is the only Awami League candidate here. The two BNP-nominated councilor candidates received money from the Awami League candidate Quddus, in collaboration with Juba Dal leader Mamunur Rashid and BNP leader Mahfuzul Haque. Therefore, the two candidates abstained from submitting their nominations on December 20.
As a result, Abdul Quddus, candidate of the Awami League, is being elected unopposed as a councilor in the 7th district of Santahar municipality. This incident provoked a negative reaction among the leaders and activists of the local BNP and its affiliates.
On December 21 an emergency meeting of the BNP Municipal de Santahar was held in this regard. At that meeting, it was unanimously decided to expel four leaders, including the two candidates for councilors. A letter with recommendations was sent to the BNP district leaders.
Bogra district BNP joint convener Fazlul Bari Talukder Belal confirmed the incident on Friday afternoon, saying that four leaders, including two candidates for councilors, had protested. If they do not give the correct answer, the decision will be made to expel them from the organization.
