Traders across the country used the dense fog excuse as prices did not drop even after the new potatoes hit the market in early December. Now, traders say, the fog has eased a bit in recent days, along with the price of potatoes. In one week, the price of new potatoes on the Dhaka market has dropped by Tk 10-15 per kg.
Sellers say prices are starting to fall as the supply of potatoes increases. Prices will go down even more. New potatoes were sold at Tk 40-42 per kg (retail level) at Karwan Bazaar on Thursday. The same potato was sold for Tk 45 in the Shantinagar market, about two and a half kilometers from Karwan Bazar. And near Shantinagar, a kilo of new potatoes has been sold in Siddheswari neighborhood stores and in vans at Tk 45-50.
However, although the price of new potatoes has dropped in the market, the prices of old potatoes have remained the same. The wholesale price for old potatoes is still Rs 40-42 per kg. In the retail market it is 45 to 46 rupees.
Like the new potato, the price of the onion (murikata) that is coming to the market is also giving buyers some relief. Madhu Mia, an onion wholesaler in Karwan Bazar, told Prothom Alo that the supply of onions at the market has been good for a few days. It is sold at 40-42 rupees per kg. The price of old domestic onion is relatively low. Domestic onions are sold at 80 taka per kg on the wholesale market. At the retail level, it is 75 to 80 rupees. Some of the neighborhood traders are accepting up to 75 rupees.
