The government has not presented a case in the case of the death of Allama Shafi: Minister of the Interior

Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the government has not brought a case in connection with the death of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, a former emir of Hefazat-e-Islam. “Anyone who is wronged can file a lawsuit if their rights are violated,” he said. The government has not filed a case.

The interior minister said: “The government has nothing to do if those who have presented a case withdraw their cases.”

The interior minister said this while speaking to reporters after launching e-passport service in six districts of the country, including Khagrachhari, on Thursday noon.

The Minister launched the Khagrachhari online service program in Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chandpur and Narayanganj districts.

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said: ‘Bangladesh launched the first e-passport service in South Asia to bring passport service to people’s doorsteps. Many large neighboring countries could not think of that, with the dedication of the Prime Minister, Bangladesh has made it the 119th country in the world. The service has reached 72 offices in 64 districts of the country. The service was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 22 of this year. A lakh of people have received this service even in the Corona situation. I hope this service reaches a million people in the future.

Regarding the safety of the sculptures in different parts of the country, the Interior Minister said: ‘These are the culture and heritage of Bangladesh. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the people to protect them.

The Minister officially handed over the electronic passports to the three recipients of the service. Later he went on a tour of the passport activities.

On December 16, a case was brought in a Chittagong court against 36 leaders and activists, including the organization’s deputy general secretary, for the alleged murder of the former emir of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi. Judge Shiblu Kumar Dey of Chittagong Judicial Court of First Instance No. 3 has ordered the Police Investigation Bureau (PBI) to investigate the incident.

The plaintiff in the case, Allama Shafi’s brother-in-law, Moin Uddin, said three incidents were mentioned in the case. It is alleged in the case that these incidents were fueled by the current Emir of Hefazat, Allama Junaid Babungari.

The second defendant is Mamunul Haque, deputy general secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, who has recently come under discussion for opposing the Bangabandhu sculpture. Hefazat-e-Islam Central Organizing Secretary Azizul Haque Islamabadi, Central Leaders Mir Idris, Habib Ullah, Ahsan Ullah and Zakaria Noman Faizi are also on the list.

The case also alleges that the defendant vandalized Allama Ahmed Shafi’s Najehal as well as his room, snatched oxygen from his mouth while he was dying, and pushed him to death. He was also charged with looting Tk 6 lakh from his office along with various valuable documents.

Abu Hanif, a lawyer in the case, said the court had learned of the case and ordered PBI to investigate within the next month.

Claiming that the case was a political conspiracy, Allama Junaid Babungari, Emir of Hifazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, said that Allama Ahmad Shafi’s death was completely normal. Strict measures will be taken if the false case is not withdrawn.

Junaid Babungari made the remarks at a press conference at the Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasa auditorium in Chittagong’s Hathazari upazila on Wednesday morning. He demanded the withdrawal of the murder case. Maulana Mahibullah Babungari, Maulana Azizul Haque Islamabadi and others were present at the time.

He said the case, filed three months after the death of Allama Ahmad Shafi, calling his death unusual, was politically motivated and a conspiracy to destroy the stable environment of the country. Junaid Babungari said that the case was a conspiracy to destroy the peaceful atmosphere of Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa and to harass Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh leaders. The emir of Hifazat-e-Islam threatened to take severe action in consultation with the country’s leading ulama if attempts were made to harass him.

Anas Madani, the son of Allama Ahmad Shafi and deputy head of the madrasa, was removed from the madrasa on September 17 in response to a student protest at the Hathazari madrasa. If the protests continue the next day, the madrasah will be closed indefinitely in a notification from the Ministry of Education. But as the protests from the agitated students did not cease, Director General Ahmed Shafi himself announced his resignation from his post around 12 noon the following day.

Later, Ahmed Shafi was admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital. When the situation deteriorated there, Ahmed Shafi was transferred to Dhaka by air ambulance on the afternoon of 19 September. He later died around 6pm.
