The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other commissioners have asserted that allegations of misconduct and financial irregularities against the current Election Commission (EC) headed by KM Nurul Huda are unfounded.

At a press conference held at the Elections Building in Agargaon on Thursday afternoon, CEC KM Nurul Huda dismissed the charges against the commission and presented its position against the various charges of 42 citizens. Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam, Shahadat Hossain and Commission Secretary Mohammad Alamgir were present at the time. However, another election commissioner, Mahbub Talukder, was not present at the press conference.

In a written statement at the press conference, the CEC Nurul Huda said that they had recently heard that 42 citizens of the country had appealed to the President to act through the Supreme Council of the Judiciary on various complaints against the Electoral Commission through a virtual conference. This has created confusion in people’s minds. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the statement of the commission in this regard. The CEC said that there was no allocation of Tk 2 crore for 15 special speakers in the training program for the 11th parliamentary elections and the upazila elections. As a result, the embezzlement allegations of around Tk 2 crore are unfounded and motivated.
