Hemayetpur in Savar, Batulia in Birulia, Tegharia in Keraniganj and Kanchpur in Narayanganj were initially selected as inter-district bus terminals to reduce traffic congestion in the capital Dhaka. However, the existing bus terminals within the capital are not being phased out, they will be used as city bus terminals. However, no specific information has been received on when work will begin on the interdistrict bus terminal.
Previously, the Bus Route Rationalization Committee had proposed 10 sites for interdistrict bus terminals and depots. From there these four locations were initially chosen. Mohakhali Interdistrict Bus Terminal will go to Birulia Batulia in Savar, Gabtoli Bus Terminal will go to Hemayetpur in Savar and Sayedabad Bus Terminal will go to Kanchpur in Narayanganj. However, buses from the southern region, including Barisal, which used to leave from Gabtali and Sayedabad bus terminals, will leave Teghariya in Keraniganj.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Mohammad visited some proposed areas for the inter-district bus terminal on Wednesday. Atiqul Islam and the Mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
After visiting the Batulia area of Birulia in Savar, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said: “We have already taken the initiative for the rationalization of bus routes. I would like to unite the entire public transport system under a single discipline through the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority. We have started working towards that goal. To do this, we have narrowed down the list of 10 locations selected for the interdistrict bus terminal. Today (yesterday) we have initially designated four locations as interdistrict bus terminals. These four were acceptable to us. These will be decided at our January meeting. Later, we will send the ministry the list of terminals in which the terminal can be configured.
Noting that interdistrict buses do not enter the city from abroad, he added: “Our aim is to reduce the pressure on Dhaka. Inter-district buses enter the Mohakhali, Sayedabad and Gabtali bus terminals in Dhaka City. City buses do not enter here. As a result, city buses are on the road everywhere, creating traffic jams and creating chaotic conditions.
At that time, the mayor said. Atiqul Islam said: “City buses will circulate within the city and buses between districts outside the city will stop at one place. They will not be able to enter the city. Now there is competition between city buses and between districts. This is causing a traffic jam by breaking the traffic system. Therefore, city buses will have to run on a specific route within the city and inter-district buses will run outside the city. Today (yesterday) the two mayors went out together to make sure. We are working on the transportation of the entire city of Dhaka.
Regarding the launch of buses through the company, Mayor Atiq said: “Previously, 180 buses from 29 companies were operating in Dhaka through the competition. We have taken the initiative to incorporate it into a company. We have talked about the Bus Owners Association and the Bus Workers Union. We all want to put order on the bus. To this end, the city bus will run the franchise route in the city and as part of it, we are starting an activity from Ghatarchar to Motijheel from April 1.
Asked by reporters how difficult it is to restore order to public transportation, Mayor Sheikh Taposh said: “There are many adversities. It is a lot of work. That is why it has not happened in the last 49 years. But we are moving forward with determination.
According to DNCC sources, a feasibility study has not yet been carried out, although initially four sites have been identified for the inter-district bus terminal. Then its viability will be tested. The decision will be sent to the ministry after a meeting in January.
Meanwhile, the common people of the capital have welcomed this plan to reduce traffic congestion. They say that if this initiative by the two mayors of Dhaka is successful, it will reduce traffic congestion in the capital. Rahela Nira, a private employee living in Kalyanpur, said: ‘I go to Uttara with two hours of traffic jam every day. My place of work there. If the district bus does not enter the city, the traffic jam may lessen a bit. That is why I welcome this initiative.
Ayesha Khatun Chaiti, a resident of Badda, said: “I left my father-in-law’s house in Mohammadpur and rented a house near the office because I lost my time due to the traffic jam. Otherwise, I would not be able to manage my son’s school or my husband’s office time in any way. With this initiative, if traffic congestion in the city is reduced, I will be able to go back to work from home.
Among others, DSCC Executive Director ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, DNCC Executive Director Selim Reza, Dhaka Transportation Coordination Authority Executive Director Khandaker Rakibur Rahman, senior officials from the two city corporations and leaders of the bus owners’ association were present during the visit.
