A court sentenced three people, including Deputy Secretary Shafiqul Islam, to various jail terms for embezzling 3.5 million Tk on behalf of purchasing products from the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC). Dhaka Special Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday.

The three convicts are Shafiqul Islam, deputy secretary to the project manager, John Noel, Messrs. Novelcore (M) official in Malaysia, and Khandaker Shahidul, a local representative who supplies the equipment. All three defendants are on the run.

Sources related to the court confirmed the matter to NTV Online, saying that Shafiqul Islam, director of the ‘purchase project’, has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined 10,000 taka. The court sentenced him to one more month for non-payment.

John Noel, Messrs. Novelcore (M) official in Malaysia and Khandaker Shahidul, local representative of the equipment supplier, have been sentenced to two years in prison without pay, a fine of Tk 10,000 and one more month in prison for non-payment. .

According to the verdict, each of the three convicts was fined Tk 30 lakh 42 thousand 20 and a total of 91 lakh 26 thousand 60 rupees. The confiscation of this money was ordered in favor of the State. The court also issued arrest warrants against the defendants in the case when they were on the run.

According to the statement, Hamidul Hasan, deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), filed a case with the Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station on October 8, 2015, alleging a financial loss of Tk 3,48,56,520 to the government to name of the purchase of equipment for the modernization of FDC. John Noel, Khandaker Shahidul, Shafiqul Islam and then-BFDC Managing Director Piyush Bandyopadhyay have been charged in the case.

According to the statement, FDC officials, including Piyush Bandyopadhyay, have neglected their professional responsibilities in the acquisition process. Instead of following the applicable rules in the pre-shipment stage, they allow the shipment of products made in China instead of the United States based on manufactured analytics. It paid for the products by accepting products made in China outside the contract with “false information that there is a recommendation” from the shipping committee. After investigating the case, ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwari released Piyush Bandyopadhyay on March 2, 2016 and filed a charge sheet against all three. During the trial, the court heard testimony from 20 of the 21 witnesses on the charge sheet.
