After Kamalapur railway station, the traditional building of the Student and Teacher Center (TSC) of Dhaka University was demolished and a modern building was planned there. The excavators will be run in this traditional facility during the year of Dhaka University’s centennial birth celebrations.
At one point, TSC was busy with various activities. However, the situation is much lower now.
The decision of the authorities to change the infrastructure by destroying tradition instead of increasing the various activities for the development of student talents has shocked and astonished people of different classes and professions including university teachers and students.
The TSC was designed by the legendary Greek architect Constantine Doxiades in the early 1960s. The building was completed during the reign of General Ayub Khan, the then military ruler of East Pakistan.
Featured Scholars and Emeritus on the demolition of the TSC building and the construction of a new one there. Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury “We want development,” he said. But breaking the TSC for him would not be acceptable at all. Because everything has tradition and individuality. Just as we don’t want to break Curzon Hall or Salimullah Hall, we don’t want to break a traditional TSCO. Another thing is that there is a huge field and an open space in the TSC facilities. But if you build a tall building, you will lose the vibration of nature and life. Meanwhile, due to the subway, there will be pressure in this place.
Professor Sirajul Islam thinks that TSC was once very popular, but now it is not. “The reason is very clear,” he said. There is no student union at the university. The student unions kept them alive and organized various competitions.
Advising on what can be done alternatively without breaking the TSC, he said, ‘You can do extensions. The space available at the Atomic Energy Commission can also be used for this. They have left this place. But whatever you do, you have to do it. ‘
Former professor and economist at DU Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud He wrote on his Facebook, ‘All the famous universities in the world can be recognized by looking at the images through some traditional installations. Although they are hundreds of years old, they are carefully preserved. These Dhaka University establishments include Curzon Hall, SM Hall and TSC. Among these, TSC is a beautiful example of relatively modern architecture built in the 1960s. This TSC has a tradition of university cultural activities in the pre-independence period of Bangladesh. Instead of maintenance, it is being demolished and multi-story buildings are being built. Economists are only criticized for understanding the market value of everything, but not the true value of anything!
However, city planners and educators insist there are no plans to demolish the TSC building. Architect Mobasher Hossain. Speaking to The Daily Star, he said: No one said the word. The TSC swimming pool was demolished and a 15-story building was designed there according to TSC requirements. Shamsul Wares, a professor at the Bangladesh University of Engineering, saw the design and said it could not be more than four stories high. At his suggestion, three stories below ground and four stories above were planned and sent to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister also said that arrangements have been made to make a large TSC. Nor did he talk about breaking the TSC. Dhaka University has studied the plans for a huge TSC and has drawn up a list of what is needed. That has been sent to PWD. PWD has verbally informed the Department of Architecture, but has not yet been informed in writing.
So can we be sure that the current TSC infrastructure exists? “We will try,” he told The Daily Star. Even then that may change. Bureaucratic thinking is different. They are very interested in breaking up. ‘
He added: “There are some people who want to destroy (want to destroy). Money once in Demolish, money again when rebuilding. However, with the permission of the Prime Minister and the university authorities, we can make a great proposal for the TSC ”.
According to experts, the history of the city is now in jeopardy due to the decision to demolish Dhaka’s important architecture to build new infrastructure in the new plan.
Urbanism and environmentalists Architect Iqbal Habib He said: ‘Architecture and literature are the two main parts of human society. That can tell the story of a nation from generation to generation. TSC is one of the earliest examples of modern architecture in Dhaka. Destroying such architecture of Doxiades is an attempt to erase the history of this city.
The university also lacks sympathy in this regard. Its size can be further increased without breaking the main structure, ‘he added.
Film director and Architect Enamul Karim Nirjhar “We recently renovated a government building,” he told The Daily Star. I did not build the building again, I only changed the parts of the building that needed to be changed. When making a decision, a decision must be made in consultation with the relevant experts, which will be suitable for the environment, good for everyone, and also tell the story of the past. When we listen to TSC, it seems very big to us, it inspires us in a way. In fact, it is no longer the University of Dhaka, it has become a country, it has become a nation. So I think that if there is still nothing definitive, then it is necessary to create a place for discussion. The following explains what the problem is and what to do. Breaking it is not a good idea. We cannot kill the past without mercy. ‘
What can be done instead of breaking the TSC? As a suggestion in response to that question, he said: ‘The master plan here is not very clear. There are many vacancies here. If more space is needed to maintain the current TSC, then we have the opportunity to do much more underground. To increase its size, we can also use the empty space around the previous one. The Atomic Energy Commission also has a place. That is also the place of our state. Another state institution will use it. If it can be solved in this way, the developments that are taking place with this metrorail can be related to each other.
Recently, Enamul Karim Nirjhar worked to give a new look to an old government building. He wrote on his Facebook status: ‘What is construction overhaul? If the car can be, why not the old building? In fact, we don’t want the country’s resources to be wasted! If the building is old, it should not be demolished. May the government’s efforts prosper! Let’s use our talent in various initiatives in the country! ‘
He reiterated that it is possible to remodel or expand the scope of the TSC in the same way, maintaining the existing infrastructure.
In a virtual discussion meeting on September 30, the rector of the University mentioned the need for a decision on TSC. Professor Md. Akhtaruzzaman He said: ‘TSC was built in 1984. At that time, the number of students in Dhaka University was three thousand eight hundred, the number of professors was just over two hundred. With this in mind, the buildings, auditoriums and facilities of TSC were built on this site. Today the university has more than two thousand teachers and more than 40 thousand students. But TSC is the same as before. That is why the Prime Minister ordered us to reorganize it.
The DU Department of Physics disagreed on the issue of demolishing the TSC and building a new one. Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun “It just came to our notice then. If we have the money, we have a lot more work to do than rebuild the TSC. There is such a beautiful green lawn inside the traditional TSC. We don’t know what the new building will look like when it is demolished. And if you build a multi-story building, the amount of this green will be reduced a bit and at the same time it will lose its beauty. ‘
He added that the DU library is very dilapidated and looks a lot like a warehouse. It has not improved. But it should be an architectural style monoroom, where you want to read.
“Our students live inhumane lives in public rooms,” he said. If we have money, this residential room problem should be solved first. One should think about how to make a cafeteria. If it’s going to be demolished, now our ugliest building is the library. It should be divided into a large library by collecting beautiful architectural designs through an open competition. That will increase the reputation of the university.
At one point, TSC was heavily involved in various activities. He said the TSC should be more dynamic so that students are interested in various creative activities rather than infrastructure changes. Students don’t do student politics now, they do national politics. If they were students of politics, they could get the facilities they need and discuss their problems.
