On the way back to Teknaf from the island of St. Martin, a tourist boat named ‘ST Bahasa Shahid Salam’ with more than a hundred tourists sank into the sea.
The incident took place in the Bay of Bengal around 3:15 pm on Sunday. Shipowners kept tourists floating in the sea for about three hours in Talbahana to repair the damaged engine.
Some of the terrified tourists called the 999 National Service for help as the ship slowly floated in Myanmar’s waters. Later, in a joint effort by the St. Martin Coast Guard, police and navy, the tourists were brought ashore in a wooden boat from the ship at night.
Mohammad Shahin, president of the Chhatra Municipal League of Teknaf, who was traveling with his family on the island, said the ship began its journey on the Teknaf-Saint Martin waterway on Sunday with more than two hundred five hundred tourists. When more than 100 tourists stayed overnight, they fell into misery on the way back to Teknaf with more than 100 passengers.
Abdur Rahman, who was visiting St. Martin with his family from Gazipur in Dhaka, said he had an unimaginable experience with a tourist boat in St. Martin. On the way back from the island, the engine broke down and I was floating in the Bay of Bengal for three hours. Without the help of 999, we could have crossed into the waters of Myanmar and been arrested by the country’s border guards. He said that to develop the tourism industry, it is necessary to stop the movement of these ruined ships in the San Martín waterway.
Mohammad Shahed, ST Language Shahid Salam Ship Resident (Technical) Supervisor, said: “The machine has no faith. This good can be so bad. I did not stop trying to correct the mistakes of others. But I couldn’t finish.
Nur Ahmed, president of St. Martin’s Union Parishad, said the naval police and the coast guard had jointly organized the return of tourists from the ship to shore.
