A three-member investigative committee on the Berobi flag distortion incident

The district administration has formed a three-member investigative committee on the distortion of the national flag at Begum Rokeya University (Berobi) in Rangpur.

Meanwhile, a written indictment of sedition has been brought against the Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (Berobi), Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, and six other professors for violating the constitution by distorting the national flag. Two university professors lodged a written complaint at the Rangpur Tajhat Metropolitan Police Station last night.

Former BCL leader Ariful Islam Arif has filed another complaint against 8 to 10 people, including 9 teachers and officials, for distorting and insulting the national flag.

According to a statement submitted by Mahmudul Haque, a professor in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, and Mashiur Rahman, Secretary General of Bangabandhu Parishad, some university professors changed the design of the national flag in the facilities of the University’s Independence Monument on December 16 to make a rectangular red flag. This violates article 4 (2) of the Constitution and they have displayed the national flag at the Independence Memorial facilities and have touched the ground and underfoot and placed photographs that violated article 7 (a) of the Constitution and they committed the crime of sedition.

Deputy Foreign Minister Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah was blamed for the order to organize the event.

The other defendants in the written complaint are Tabiur Rahman Pradhan, General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association, Hafizur Rahman Selim, Union Member and Head of the Mathematics Department, Parimal Chandra Barman, Head of the Bangladesh Department, Masudul Haque, Professor from the marketing department, Sohag Ali, professor from the history department, and Rahmatullah.

Ariful Islam Arif, former vice president of the Berobi Chhatra League, filed another written complaint with the Tajhat Police Station. It was alleged that the red circle of the flag was distorted and the flag was placed under the feet. Confirming the matter, the Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Tajhat Police Station, Akhtaruzzaman, said: ‘I have received a written complaint. The preliminary investigation is ongoing. Appropriate legal action will be taken after the investigation.

In the early afternoon, ordinary students from the university organized a human chain and a demonstration in protest of the incident. Later another protest rally was held there under the banner of the Rangpur Juba League.

The demonstration demanded immediate legal action, including the expulsion of those accused for distorting the national flag.
