BNP’s discomfort on the Padma Bridge ‘visible’!

Putting an end to all speculation and rumors, the Padma Bridge is finally moving towards its final implementation. When the government and its supporters are excited about this, the BNP and its allies are very uncomfortable. The discomfort in the speeches of the leaders is not unknown.

In January 2016, BNP President Khaleda Zia said in a statement about the Padma Bridge: “The government dreams of the Padma Bridge. But the Padma Bridge will not be around during the Awami League’s tenure. This bridge is being built with patchwork. No one will climb this bridge. There are many risks. ‘ However, the head of one of the country’s largest parties had to face widespread criticism for this statement.

But at that time the top BNP leaders also made similar statements together with the party chief. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also said: “Khaleda Zia did not say that if the Padma Bridge is built to the wrong and wrong design, it will not last.”

Although the implementation of the project has been delayed, the Padma Bridge is now fully visible. With this, there is a wave of enthusiasm among the leaders and workers of the ruling party. Civil society and supporters are not holding back. But the responsible BNP leaders did not say anything about it immediately, nor did the party give any official response.

Mahmudur Rahman Manna, a convener of the BNP-led National Unity Front, called the Padma Bridge a good government initiative, but questioned the cost of construction.

After the Padma Bridge became fully visible on December 10 with the installation of the last span, BNP President’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan Sohail posted some questions about the project on Facebook social media. In a post entitled ‘As a citizen of the country, I have some information about this bridge, I have inquiries regarding the installation of the last section of the Padma Bridge’.

Sources say that earlier the party chief had made several statements about the implementation of the Padma Bridge, but now party leaders have opted for silence. Following the instructions of President Khaleda Zia and Acting President Tareq Rahman, they have refrained from speaking about the Padma Bridge. Even if the BNP is involved in trolls or ridiculous comments about the Padma Bridge, the High Command has asked it to avoid it. If necessary, political programs, meetings and seminars have been requested to discuss the cost of the Padma Bridge.

A section of the BNP believes that the party’s position on the Padma Bridge was not correct. By taking a position against such a large initiative, the BNP took a position against the aspirations of the people of the country. Contrary to Khaleda Zia’s opinion, what the government has made visible will make BNP’s policy in the south more rebellious.

Although senior leaders were silent on the Padma Bridge issue, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir responded to the question at a press conference on December 14. He said: ‘It seems they have built (the Padma Bridge) with their ancestral property. One is saying, will BNP not go through the fund? That means it’s their ancestral property. ‘

Mirza Fakhrul said: ‘Everything is being taken by cutting people’s pockets. Everyone pays taxes here. Where there is a rupee, there is a tax of 10 rupees. The amount of VAT has been multiplied by three, four or five.

He said: ‘You will see in depth that what is happening here is complete looting in the name of development. Wherever they look now for profit. They are building houses, building overpasses, building mega projects, looting mega ”.
