The BNP leader has been accused of breaking the limbs of a businessman in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila for obstructing fish farming on farmland. The incident took place near the Manohar Bazar intersection of the Shariatpur-Madaripur highway around 9 pm on Wednesday.
The victim’s family said the terrorists left businessman Imam Uddin Chayal thinking they would beat him to death with a hammer. He was later rescued by the locals and admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. Despite submitting written complaints to several places, including the deputy commissioner, the merchant was not spared. A case has been filed against 8 people at the Palang Model Police Station.
Muktar Hossain Chaial, younger brother of the wounded businessman Palang Thana, and local sources said that in 2016, BNP leaders Masum Sardar and Mostafa Bepari were forcibly farming fish on about 10 acres of land belonging to 40 merchants and farmers in the area of Paschim Parasaddi-Hajatkhola of the Union of Angaria in the Sadar upazila district of Shariatpur. Influential people forcibly farmed fish despite the administration’s promise to give up the land over landowner objections last year.
This time they decided to grow rice on their land because they did not pay the owners on time. However, as the influential people did not want to leave the land, the owners lodged a written complaint with the Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner, the Police Superintendent, the Officer of Upazila Nirbahi and the DGFI.
Businessman Imam Uddin Chaiyal, 40, was detained by a group of 10 to 12 people, including Masum Sardar, former Deputy Secretary General of Angaria Union BNP in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila, and his son Ashraful Islam Babu Sardar. They beat and stabbed the businessman with a hammer, a Chinese ax and an iron bar, leaving him dead. The locals rescued him and admitted him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
Moktar Hossain Chayal, younger brother of the wounded businessman, presented a case to the Palang police station accusing 6 people.
Moniruzzaman Chaiyal, older brother of the wounded Imam Uddin Chaiyal, said that Masum Sardar, former Deputy Secretary General of Angaria Union BNP, his son Ashraful Islam Babu Sardar, Muzai Sardar, Anand Sardar, Sohag Sardar, Sohail Sardar and their men attacked my brother with a hammer, an ax and an iron bar. They beat and stabbed him to death and left him. His condition is critical.
Mostafa Bepari, a fishmonger, said: “In the beginning I owned the fence. Now I am not involved in it. I don’t know about beatings.
BNP leader and fishmonger Masum Sardar and his son Ashraful Islam Babu Sardar could not be reached for comment.
The Palang OC Aslam Uddin model police station said a case has been brought against six people for hitting a businessman in Angaria with a stick and breaking his arms and legs. We will take the necessary measures.
