A press release from the Welfare Ministry for Expatriates and Overseas Employment said on Thursday that workers could move to Jordan next year.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said two days ago that a Jordanian company would hire 12,000 skilled garment workers and that company officials would soon arrive in Bangladesh to finalize talks.
Sanal Kumar, president and managing director of Classic Fashion, Jordan’s largest garment factory, met with Imran Ahmed, Minister of Welfare for Expatriates and Overseas Employment, in his office on Thursday.
According to the press release, Sanal Kumar said that of his organization’s 26,000 employees, 18,000 are from Bangladesh. They will hire another 12,000 workers from Bangladesh next year.
He said the main reason for hiring more workers in Jordan was the talent, hard work and diligence of the Bangladeshi workers.
According to the Bangladeshi Embassy in Jordan, there are some 60,000 Bangladeshi workers in Jordan, a Middle Eastern country, of whom 45,000 work in garment factories.
According to the company’s website, Classic Fashion, based in the Mina region of Jordan, produces 4.5 million garments a day. The company sells more than £ 80 million a year.
The Foreign Minister had previously said that the recruitment process for new workers would be carried out through Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESEL), the only state-owned exporter of labor.
In a meeting with the president of Classic Fashion, the minister met with the secretary of the ministry, Ahmed Munirush Salehin, as well as the managing director of Boycell. Saiful Hasan Badal was also present.
