China has been accused of forcibly enslaving Uighur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province. A recent report by the Center for Global Policy, an American think tank, reveals alarming information. The UK-based BBC also participated in the report.
It says the ruling Communist Party of China is forcibly growing cotton with Uighur Muslims. However, Beijing did not respond to a request for comment.
On the other hand, after this accusation came to light, some of the world’s leading shoe and clothing manufacturers have been pointed the finger.
According to a report by the Center for Global Policy, 560,000 Uighur Muslims were forced to grow cotton in 2016. The way they were taken to certain places is contrary to modern labor rights. They were practically treated like slaves.
In Xinjiang province, the Chinese administration has long been vocal in its treatment of Uighur Muslims. Beijing has been repeatedly criticized by the international community at the United Nations on the issue. Recently, the German-led European Union criticized China in this regard. However, the issue of slavery came to the fore for the first time.
Xinjiang province produces 20 percent of the world’s cotton. China exports this cotton to different countries in the world. Companies like Adidas, Niko, Gap buy cotton from Xinjiang province. According to rights groups, these companies knowingly buy cotton from China. It must stop immediately.
Isa, president of the Munich-based Uighur Muslim Congress, said that they had previously filed a lawsuit in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang province. This time a new case against slavery will be presented. Source: DW
