Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that a group of academics agreed to solve the problem through talks against the construction of the sculpture of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In response to several questions from journalists in the Secretariat on Tuesday, the Interior Minister said: “Negotiations will continue, solutions will come through negotiations.”

On Monday evening, 12 prominent academics, including Maulana Farid Uddin Masood, led by Befaq President Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, gathered at the Interior Minister’s residence in Dhanmondi. The Minister of State and the Secretary of the Ministry of Religion were also present at the meeting.

“We have spoken, the academics have spoken along their lines,” he told reporters. The decision was not made that there would be no sculpture. No decision has been made that Mujib Minar will be there. These will end with a discussion.

The minister said: “Academics have spoken out against attempts to spread various tensions on Facebook. Scholars have said to monitor these things.

The interior minister said: ‘The academics wanted to meet with the prime minister. The prime minister will meet if he agrees. But it is also our responsibility to keep the Prime Minister healthy in the face of the coronavirus outbreak.

“There will be more discussions on the issues we have discussed,” he said.
