Police have brought a case against Grameenphone, the country’s leading mobile phone operator, for allegedly leaking customer information. In addition to Grameenphone, two others, including a customer service representative, were also charged in the case.
DMP’s Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Harun Aur Rashid told reporters in his office Tuesday afternoon.
Hatirjheel Police Inspector Mohammad Golam Azam is known to have brought the case as a plaintiff. Case No. 24 of the Hatirjheel Police Station. The defendants in the case brought under the Telecommunications Regulation Act are Grameenphone Limited, Rubel Mahmud Anik and Parveen Akhter.
DC Harun said a case has been filed against Grameenphone at the Hatirjheel police station under the Telecommunications Act. The lawsuit was settled out of court.
He said: ‘Six clients have already complained to the police about being misled by the information. Meanwhile, two people have been arrested in the case. They are Grameenphone’s customer service manager, Rubel Mahmud Anik, and con artist Parveen Akhter.
Scammers used to steal the personal information of various wealthy clients and extort money from them for fear of leaking it later. Many are forced to pay out of fear of social harassment and humiliation.
Regarding the police case against Grameenphone, the company told reporters that Grameenphone adheres to strict data protection policies and measures. They have been informed through media reports that a GP franchise worker (GPCF) is being investigated by the police for being involved in an alleged fraud. Grameenphone will cooperate fully with all law enforcement agencies in this regard.
