He said that democracy in the United States had been “pushed, tested and threatened,” but “has proven to be strong, true and strong.”
“Now is the time to start over,” he said, referring to Trump’s decision to question the election result.
With this announcement from the Electoral College, Biden took another step on his path to becoming president of the United States. On January 20, he and his running mate Kamala Harris will be sworn in as president and vice president.
However, President Trump has not given any indication to accept these results. He had no comment after the Electoral College results were announced.
In an announcement on Twitter shortly after the election results were confirmed, he announced that he would be stepping down as United States Attorney General William Barr. Despite Trump’s demands, Barr said there was no major electoral fraud.
In his 13-minute speech, Biden praised ordinary Americans. They commented that they did not accept any threats.
He said: “The flame of democracy was lit in this nation long ago and we know that nothing, not even an epidemic or abuse of power, can extinguish this flame.
“To be united, to heal wounds, to start over, as we have done throughout our history.”
