Rohingya move to Bhasanchar will endanger the country’s sovereignty: BNP

The BNP has expressed fear that “the sovereignty of Bangladesh is in danger” due to the relocation of Rohingya refugees to Bhasanchar, who fled torture by the Myanmar army.

Apart from this, the party also believes that the process of repatriation of the extremely poor Rohingya to their homeland will be uncertain.

Recently, a group of Rohingya refugees from 1842 were transferred from Cox’s Bazar to Bhasanchar on Bhasanchar Island in the Hatiyar Jarashwar Union of Noakhali.

Human rights groups Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Refugee International have called for an end to the relocations of the Rohingya to Bhasanchar.

However, the Bangladeshi government says it will prioritize the repatriation of Rohingya who have been forcibly displaced from Myanmar. Even if a part is transferred to Bhasanchar, they must return to Myanmar.

In light of this, the party held a press conference at the BNP president’s political office in Gulshan, the capital, on Monday.

At the press conference, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the isolated and unelected government of the Awami League has been failing on the Rohingya issue from the beginning. They have not exerted effective pressure on Myanmar to repatriate more than 1.2 million Rohingya to their homeland, Rakhine.

He said the government has so far been unable to send a single Rohingya refugee to Rakhine. They were unable to demonstrate the sincerity and goodwill of the government in repatriating the Rohingya. The lack of effective internationalization of this long-standing problem is undoubtedly the ultimate failure of the government. As a result, the repatriation process has become uncertain.

The BNP secretary general said that the relocation of some Rohingya to the newly created Bhasanchar island in the Bay of Bengal, ignoring the “no” from the United Nations and international aid agencies and Western powers, has weakened their demand for repatriation. with dignity and security. It will protect the interests of Myanmar, they will breathe a sigh of relief.

Mirza Fakhrul believes that the pressure on Myanmar for repatriation will decrease and the pressure on Bangladesh will increase as repatriation is uncertain.

‘This will jeopardize the sovereignty of Bangladesh. It will have a lasting effect on Bangladesh’s environment, economy and politics, amounting to suicide.

In the interests of the greater public interest and national security, the BNP has called for a permanent solution to the problem by immediately halting the process of relocation of the Rohingya to Bhasanchar and repatriating them to their homeland Rakhine, reinforcing international pressure.

At the press conference, Mirza Fakhrul further said that the Bhasanchar project is basically an extension of the government’s Asrayan-3 Project. This project is a corrupt government megaproject. The project initially allocated Tk 2,312 crore for the relocation of Rohingyas to Bhasanchar. Later, like other projects, the cost of the project was increased to Tk 3,095 crore. These projects have the potential to loot billions of rupees in the long run due to not following the proper bidding process.

He also criticized the media for publishing news in favor of the Rohingya relocation to Bhasanchar.

Fakhrul said that various propaganda in favor of the Bhasanchar asylum camp was being carried out with some journalists from ‘Dalkana’ to justify the project and the wide-ranging corruption of the government.

The BNP believes that the resolution of the Rohingya crisis could be accelerated if journalists speak out in favor of the safe and permanent repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar without defending the government.

Mirza Fakhrul said that BNP President Khaleda Zia had asked the ruling government to provide refuge for the Rohingya when the Myanmar army began massacring the Muslim Rohingya people in August 2016. Since then, our party has been continuously holding seminars , symposia, writings, publications and campaigns on the Rohingya issue at home and abroad.

He said the BNP wants the Rohingya to be repatriated safely. The Rohingya regain citizenship of their beloved homeland Myanmar. Ensuring general safety in their homes and workplaces.

BNP Secretary General said: “We believe that Rohingya refugees stay in Bangladesh for a short time only in safe places.” Therefore, I call on the international community, including the United Nations, to come forward to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
