The government took up a project two and a half years ago to preserve the memory of the great liberation war. The project was carried out to preserve 261 slaughterhouses scattered across the country, as well as to erect memorials there. The project will expire in June of next year. However, so far only the Liberation War Ministry has been able to complete the conservation work of a slaughterhouse and construction of a monument. Of the 260 remaining, 3 are nearing completion. Ministry officials said work has begun on 12 of them.

According to the Ministry of the Liberation War, the construction of 265 monuments could not begin even in two and a half years. Ministry officials could not say when the work would begin. But the duration of the project is only six months.

The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has demanded that the slaughterhouse conservation works and the construction of the monument be completed. However, based on on-site inspections, project contractors, and the local public works office, construction of the 23-foot-tall monument will be completed in March next year. On July 19, the contractor received a work order of Tk 72 lakh for the project. The contractor claims that 80 percent of the work has been completed. In this regard, Ujjal Chandra Byapari, Deputy Assistant Engineer, Pirojpur Office, Department of Public Works, said that the progress of the work is good. The work can be completed within the stipulated time.
