The committee of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs initially approved the names of 1,222 people for inclusion in the list of martyred intellectuals.
The decision was made after the first committee meeting of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs on Sunday. Furthermore, the next meeting will determine the definition of martyred intellectuals who were brutally murdered by Pakistani aggressors and their allies during the 1971 liberation war.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Tapan Kanti Ghosh.
Previously, on November 19, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs formed an 11-member committee comprised of freedom fighters, Liberation War researchers, and government officials to compile and verify the list.
The Minister of Liberation War Affairs, AQM Mozammel Haque, said: “The committee will finalize the definition of martyred intellectuals at the next meeting. The meeting can be held in January.
“The committee approved the names of 1,222 people for the preliminary list,” he said.
He said, we have the names of 1,222 people. Of these, the ministry has the names of 1,060 people and the commemorative stamps issued in the name of intellectuals martyred at different times have the names of 152 people. Initially, these have been approved in principle.
“We are optimistic about the full list for next year,” he said.
Committee member Shahriar Kabir said: “The names of these martyred intellectuals have been found in the biographical encyclopedia ‘Shaheed Buddhijibi Koshgranth’ published by the Bangla Academy, the documentary ‘Bangladesh’, ‘Banglapedia’ published by the government of Bangladesh in 1972 and seals”.
The committee will consider those who were assassinated between March 25, 1971 and January 31, 1982, as eligible for the list of martyred intellectuals.
Another committee member, Nasiruddin Yusuf, said: “We will send letters to DC and UNO asking for the names of the martyred intellectuals in their respective areas.” We want names, but we won’t just trust bureaucrats. We will also receive help from students and youth.
He added: “We will not create a new definition of intellectual martyr. Instead, we will coordinate existing definitions in various research books, including the ‘Shaheed Buddhijibi Koshgranth’ from the Bangla Academy.
Meanwhile, a press release from the ministry said the committee will determine the definition of who will be included as martyrs among the martyrs of the liberation war. To do this, he will prepare a list of martyred intellectuals by classifying the information obtained from various research books, magazine clippings, television reports and other sources. In addition, the committee will examine requests received from various ministries, departments, agencies, districts and upazilas and other sources and will recommend inclusion in the list of martyred intellectuals.
