The Amar Ekushey Book Fair organized by Bangla Academy has been postponed. The two organizations representing the publishers participating in the fair, the Association of Book Publishers and Distributors and the Association of Knowledge and Creative Publishers, have protested against the academy’s decision. The protest was announced in a statement sent to the media on Saturday.

The two presidents of both associations. The statement was signed by Arif Hossain and Farid Ahmed. The authorities of the Bangla Academy have decided to postpone the next ‘Ekushey Loving Book Fair 2021’ in a unilateral meeting. However, the Board of Directors of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, which is in charge of the book fair, is not aware of this. In addition, no formal or informal discussions were held with either of the two organizations representing publishers, the Association of Publishers and Sellers of Books and the Association of Creative and Knowledge Publishers. The Amar Ekushey Book Fair is the pride of our tradition. However, the Bangla Academy made a unilateral decision to postpone such an event. We, the Bangladeshi publishing community, strongly condemn and protest the issue.

The statement further said that considering the time frame, the Board of Directors of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair could have discussed the matter in detail and, if necessary, alternative arrangements could have been made rescheduling the book fair. There was also the opportunity to think about how to follow the hygiene rules. The Prime Minister’s directive is to try to normalize economic activities by following the hygiene rules after the mask. But all this has been ignored.
