In this situation, the bridges department has decided on a new action plan to launch the bridge at the golden anniversary of independence on December 16 next year. Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Kader has also announced the launch of the bridge on December 16 in more than one official speech.
However, the bridges department believes that the bridge’s commissioning date will not be set on December 16 next year. The government is discussing the launch of the bridge on March 26, 2022 at the policy-making stage. Meanwhile, at a function at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Thursday, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said the Padma Bridge could be inaugurated in June 2022. He was secretary of the bridges department for a long time before becoming cabinet secretary.
Apart from this, China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC), the main bridge contractor, has another request for the Padma Bridge launch. They said work on the main bridge (including roads and railways) would be completed on April 23, 2022. According to him, they have asked the bridges department to extend the time. However, the bridges department has yet to make a decision on this.
