On the Kapisia-Sreepur Regional Link Highway built on the banks of the Shitalakshya River in Gazipur, another road collapse has occurred near the Bhawal Narayanpur Post Office in Narayanpur. The highway, recently built by the Department of Highways and Highways, is 300 feet long on the east-west side, 20 feet wide, and about 120 feet below ground level, about 15 feet below ground. In the same place, in the last 18 years, there have been two more incidents of walking paths with trees.
According to locals, cracks were seen in the road around 11 o’clock last night. The incident took place on Friday (December 11) morning. The highway has been cut off from Sripur since the landslide.
The defending president of Kapasia Upazila Parishad, Md Amanat Hossain Khan, and the president of Sadar UP, Md Sakhawat Hossain, visited the site.
It can be seen on the ground that bandits from the Kapasia and Sreepur regional connecting road near the Bhawal Narayanpur post office on the east side of Narayanpur Bazar have made their way towards the Shitalakshya river about 300 feet long and 15 feet wide. After learning of this incident, people from the area have gathered at the scene.
It was learned that there are signs from the RHD authorities on both sides of the road, and monitoring of the settlement of the soil is being carried out there. As a result, drivers must be very careful when driving. The path, about 20 feet wide, cracked into an arc and became a steep stop. The locals feared that any accident could happen at any moment.
After handover of the road in 2016, the Gazipur Highway Department rebuilt the road. There have been some cracks in this part in the last few months since it was recently built. In the fall it is paired with a new shade.
The first major landslide occurred at the same location in February 2005 and the second in February 2016. Locals in the area believed that the illegal and unplanned extraction of sand from the Shitalakshya River that flows alongside the road has caused repeated incidents.
According to a local source, a team of experts from Dhaka University visited the road in 2005. At that time, they suggested that the part to be given may contain low-quality coal peat (black earth). When the water level drops in the dry season, these charcoal soils lose their holding capacity and go down and the road collapses.
In this regard, the lawyer for the president of Kapasia Upazila Parishad, Mr. Amanat Hossain Khan, said that the previous landslides also occurred in winter. This time too the road collapsed and the ground at the side of the road moved towards the river. Then it can be assumed that when the water pressure in the river decreases, the soil moves into the river and the road collapses. Arrangements will be made to speed up the journey in consultation with the authorities concerned.
Gazipur’s highways department executive engineer Mohammad Saifuddin said the incident was regrettable. We are also disappointed. The road repairs will be carried out very soon knowing the cause of the incident.
