The president of the United States, Donald Trump, and executed Brandon Bernard
The administration of outgoing US President Donald Trump is pushing for the execution of five convicts before leaving power. A man named Brandon Bernard was executed in Indiana on Thursday. Bernard apologized at the last minute, but the United States Supreme Court rejected him.
The BBC reports that the “courtesy” of not carrying out the death penalty amid a change of president in the United States has been going on for 130 years. Trump violated that courtesy by imposing the death of Bernard.
Bernard is followed by four other defendants who are being pursued by the Trump administration for execution. Because, on January 20, Joe Biden will become president of the United States after the change of power. In other words, the Trump administration plans to execute the remaining four within the next month.
If the order goes into effect, it will be the highest execution in the last 100 years under Trump. If these five executions are carried out, the total number of executions under Trump will rise to 13. Trump’s order has executed eight people since July.
Brandon Bernard, 40, was sentenced to death in 1999 for murder. Bernard is the youngest criminal to be executed by the United States federal government in almost 60 years. He was a teenager at the time of the crime.
His execution was carried out with a lethal injection on Thursday. Earlier, Bernard expressed his condolences to the family of the couple who killed him.
