Griezmann cancels contract with Huawei for surveillance of Uyghurs
Antoya Griezmann

Barcelona’s French soccer star Antoya Griezmann canceled a sponsorship deal with the country’s telecommunications company Huawei for its role in policing China’s Muslim Uighurs.

The news was confirmed by the international media BBC.

According to a recent report, Huawei has developed facial recognition software that will help police identify Uighurs.

Huawei, however, vehemently denied the claim, telling the BBC that they were disappointed in Griezmann’s decision.

China has long persecuted the Uighur minority. The populous West Asian country has also come under fire for it. The Chinese government is believed to have detained more than one million Uighurs in Xinjiang province. The state called it a “reeducation camp.”

Beijing, however, has consistently denied the atrocities committed against the Uighurs, saying the camps were established to prevent outside terrorist attacks and improve employment opportunities.
