The first stone of the current parliament building was laid about a hundred years ago. One hundred years later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the new building in the current Parliament premises. The new parliament building will be built with approximately one billion rupees. But the new parliament building is part of the Modi government’s ambitious plan.

The project that Modi has undertaken has been called the Central Vista project. Four complexes will be installed on both sides of Rashtrapati Bhavan from India Gate. All government ministries will be there. Sophisticated building. Modern workplace, with all the facilities. Many of the existing buildings will be demolished. There will be no more offices in the South and North blocks. They will have a museum. The Prime Minister’s residence will be built next to the South Block. The vice president’s residence will be next to the North Block. The cost of the entire project has been estimated at more than Tk 20,000 crore.

However, there is a thorn in the implementation of this project. That is the case presented in the Supreme Court. A total of ten cases have been filed against the project. Mainly to save the environment and heritage of Delhi. Because many trees will be cut down in the implementation of this project. Green can be lost under the pressure of concrete. The Supreme Court said the inauguration ceremony of the new parliament building could take place. Nothing more than that. Cannot start job. Not a single tree can be cut down. As a result, we have to wait for the verdict of the Supreme Court to start working.

The new parliament building is necessary for two reasons. First, the current parliament building has aged. It has several problems. Second, the current membership of the Lok Sabha is 543 and that of the Rajya Sabha is 245. No more members can sit in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. No more space. There has been a demand to increase the membership of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for a long time. One of the reasons it was not accepted is lack of space, the other is that people in North India were not using contraceptives correctly. South India did. So if it increases now, the number of MPs in North India will increase more than in the South. Seats will increase based on population.

The new parliament building will accommodate six people in the Lok Sabha and 364 in the Rajya Sabha. There will be office space for each MP. There will be two floors below grade and two floors above grade. The Prime Minister said that Parliament will function in both new and old buildings. The foundation stone ceremony was conducted by the priests of Sringeri Math. There were also representatives of all religions.

The government’s argument is that whatever the condition of the parliament building today or tomorrow, a new building had to be built. But some experts say the sewers and electrical system of the parliament building are outdated. They could be changed. Why will the new building be built? Controversy is growing over the creation of new central secretariat complexes in vast areas. To do this, the Jawaharlal Nehru building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was built a few years ago at a cost of Tk 200 crore, will also be demolished. Many buildings, including Shastri Bhaban, Rail Bhaban, Udyog Bhaban, will be demolished. The National Museum, the National Archives, the Indira Gandhi National Museum of Arts and Crafts will not be in place either. Many trees will be cut down. There is a danger of green destruction.

Environmentalists say the same could be done at lower cost by renovating existing buildings. And historians say that the history of Delhi is being destroyed. Heritage is being destroyed. The character of central Delhi is changing. The image of Delhi will change. The entire inheritance will be destroyed. The 70 acres of open land now available to the people will go to government officials and ministers. Every day thousands of people gather on the lawn near the Gateway of India. Everything will get out of hand.
