The Padma Bridge is no longer a dream, it has become a reality. The last 41 span of the Padma Bridge was laid on Thursday (December 12). The 6,150 meter long bridge is fully visible through it. There is still a lot of work to do on the bridge, which will take about a year to complete.

Project Manager and Executive Engineer (Main Bridge) Dewan Abdul Quader said that as of December 3, 1,265 of 2,916 road slabs and 1,930 of 2,959 main bridge railway slabs have been installed. 310 of the 474 Super-T beams have been installed on the Mawa and Jajira viaducts. The rest of the road slabs, rail slabs and super-beams will take about eight months to install. Then the pitch will be cast on the slab. In addition, there is also the work of installing street lamps.

He added that 126 road slabs and 192 railway slabs from the Padma Bridge were submerged in the river due to erosion. They are being done again. The railway girders will be brought from Luxembourg. They are expected to move to the construction site next February.

Apart from these works, the installation works for electricity, gas and telecommunications lines are pending. Still, the Padma Bridge may open to traffic after one year.

Sharful Islam Sarkar, executive engineer (river governance) of the bridge, said that a total of 12 km of river management would be carried out at the southern end of the bridge. Of this, 8 km of work have been completed. Three kilometers of river governance works remain in the Kanthalbari area of Madaripur and another kilometer upstream is under construction.

“Our goal is to complete the main river governance tasks before the next monsoon, such as dredging, sandbags, CC blocks,” he said. If these works can be completed before the monsoon, then the discharge can be done during the monsoon season.
