India supports Bangladesh’s candidacy for the post of Executive Director (ED) of the South East Asia Regional Office (SIERO) of the World Health Organization (WHO). The newly appointed High Commissioner of India in Dhaka, Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy, expressed his support during a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Ganobhaban on Thursday morning.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Hasan Zahid Tushar’s deputy press secretary briefed reporters. He said that the Indian ambassador had discussed with the Prime Minister the problems that Bangladeshi citizens face in obtaining Indian visas due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The High Commissioner informed the Prime Minister that 90 percent of Indian visas have already been issued in various cases, with the rest to be issued depending on the Covid-19 situation.

Vikram Kumar mentioned the ongoing process of supplying 30 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to Bangladesh through the Serum Institute of India. In this context, he also expressed his government’s willingness to help Bangladeshi health professionals increase their capacity to effectively distribute the covid vaccine. He emphasized improving business connectivity between the two countries in mutual interest.
