A supporter of an Awami League candidate was killed in an attack on the by-elections for the post of president of Bagharpara Upazila Parishad in Jessore. He was attacked in Betalpara Bazar in upazila on Wednesday night. He died on the way to Dhaka on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Khaledur Rahman Tito. He is the son of Montaz Mollah from the village of Betalpara in Bagharpara upazila. He is a farmer by profession.

Local police and resident sources said that some people, including Khaledur Rahman, a supporter of the ship’s symbol, were staying at Betalpara Bazar around 8.30pm last night. Supporters of the independent candidate Dilu Patwari, who was deprived of the ship’s symbol at the time, attacked there. At that moment, Khaledur was angry. He was rushed to Jessore General Hospital in critical condition. He later died this morning on the way to Dhaka.

Jessore Police Assistant Superintendent Jewel Imran said a supporter of the ship’s symbol candidate was killed in the ambush. He is being provided with security so that the agitated mob cannot attack the independent candidate Dilu Patwari.

“I don’t know anything about the attack,” Dilu Patwari said.
