In a virtual meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, on Tuesday, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN in Geneva and Ambassador Mostafizur Rahman said: “There is no reason for the international community to worry about the relocation of the Rohingya to Bhasan Char “.

The Ambassador highlighted the vulnerable location of large numbers of Rohingya in confined spaces behind relocation, uncertain livelihoods, extreme deterioration of local socio-economic and environmental conditions, and increasing security risks.

At the time, Ambassador Mostafizur Rahman said: “The government of Bangladesh has taken steps to improve the quality of life, livelihoods and necessary security for the Rohingya in Bhasan Char. The Rohingya have been relocated to Bhasanchar of their own free will.

The High Commissioner also drew the High Commissioner’s attention to the satisfaction expressed by the Rohingya relocated to Bhasan Char in various local and international media reports.

He said: “Despite the sincere efforts of the Bangladeshi government, it has not been possible to initiate repatriation of Rohingya to their own land in the past three years due to a lack of political will on the part of the Myanmar government.

The Bangladeshi Ambassador called on the international community, including the United Nations, to take more effective steps to find a sustainable solution to the problem by creating an enabling environment in Rakhine, Myanmar and the speedy repatriation of the Rohingya.

He stressed the need for all countries, including investors from neighboring countries, ASEAN and Myanmar, to play a responsible role.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees praised the Bangladeshi government for providing refuge and humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya.

The High Commissioner agreed that the crisis must be resolved by the repatriation of the Rohingya to their homeland. He assured the Ambassador that all efforts to this end will continue.
