The controversial leader of Hefazat, Maulana Mamunul Haque, who opposed the Bangabandhu sculpture, suddenly visited the Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong. Mamunul Haque, who was banned from entering Chittagong only 12 days ago, arrived at Hathazari Madrasa on Wednesday afternoon.
During the visit, he visited the grave of the late Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi of Hifazat and met separately with the new Amir of the Allama Junaid Babungari organization and members of the Shura Committee of the Maulana Madrasa Sheikh Ahmed and Maulana Yahya.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving office.
Maulana Zakaria Noman Faizi, Hifazat-e-Islam’s central advertising secretary, said: “Maulana Mamunul Haque arrived at Hathazari Madrasa in the afternoon. He visited the grave of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi Hazur and met with other Hazur, including the current Emir of Hifazat, and spoke about the current situation. Then around 5pm, he returned to Dhaka in his car.
Maulana Mamunul Haque, Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Khilafat Jub Majlis and Central President of Bangladesh Khilafat Jub Majlis, publicly opposed the installation of the Bangabandhu sculpture at the Shane Risalat Conference organized by Bangladesh Khilafat Jub Majlis Dhaka Metropolitan on November 13 in the BMA Auditorium in the capital.
Hefazat’s deputy general secretary, Maulana Mamunul Haque, faced widespread criticism across the country for the incident. He was supposed to join the mahfil on November 26 in Hathazari. But the Awami League of Chittagong Metropolitan District and its affiliates organized protests and demonstrations to prevent Mamunul Haque from arriving in Chittagong. Mamunul Haque did not appear on the mahfil stage that day due to severe obstruction by various political parties and organizations in the streets and under pressure from the administration.
Meanwhile, two sedition cases against Junaid Babungari, Mamunul Haque and Syed Faizul Karim, Nayeb Amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, were filed in the Dhaka Metropolitan Chief Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder’s court on December 6. The court ordered PBI to investigate the two cases.
