Begum Rokeya’s ‘Alokvartika’ sculpture has been unveiled at Shalban Corner next to Government Begum Rokeya College in Rangpur city. The sculpture was unveiled on the anniversary of the birth and death of Begum Rokeya, a pioneer in women’s education.
Sculptor Anik Reza unveiled the sculpture around 11pm. Earlier, a brief discussion was held there. Writer Rezaul Karim, journalist Liaquat Ali, Government Begum Rokeya College Professor Shah Sultan Talukder, Assistant Professor Azahar Ali, AIM Musa, Anima Barman, Mahfizul Alam, poet and editor Masud Rana spoke on the occasion.
The illuminated rocker that protrudes from the interior of the exposed stone-concrete bears the name of the luminaire. Construction of the sculpture was inaugurated in June 2016. The construction cost Tk 15 lakh, funded by the Rangpur City Corporation. The height of the sculpture is 20 feet from the ground. Of these, only the rocky concrete outcrop is about 12 feet long. The sculpture contains the names and sayings of some of the books written by Begum Rokeya, including the year of his birth and death.
