Now the road is our direction

Shahriar Mahmud, a student in the Dhaka College English department in the 2018-19 academic year, who participated in the human chain, told Prothom Alo: “Our results have been published 11 months after the exam. Now I know we didn’t get a promotion next year. As a result, the masses have failed. The pass rate in the English department is 21 percent, in economics 29 percent, in Bengali 31 percent, and in political science many fail. Due to CGPA-2 rules, even after passing five subjects, we will not get promotion next year. It costs 800 rupees to take the exam next year. Is Dhaka University open to trade?

Shahriar further said: ‘We have provided memoranda to the directors, departments, the Office of the Dean of Dhaka University, the Vice Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor of our respective universities in this regard. But we got no response from anywhere. If you go to Dhaka University, you go to university and from university you go to Dhaka University, who will we go to now? Now the road is our direction. ‘

In order to reduce the pressure on the National University, seven government faculties in Dhaka were affiliated with Dhaka University in February 2016. The universities are Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College.

Students from these universities were first excited after joining Dhaka University. But in less than a year, the emotion faded over the failure of the session and the masses. Students from seven universities also joined the movement in various phases.
