The United Nations has passed a resolution calling on Israel to renounce its nuclear weapons. The UN General Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution titled “The Danger of Nuclear Weapons in West Asia.”
153 countries voted in favor of the resolution and six against. In addition, 25 countries abstained from voting. The countries that voted against the proposal are the United States, Canada, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia. Jerusalem Post News.
The resolution calls on Israel not to store nuclear weapons, as well as to refrain from testing new nuclear weapons or developing new ones.
The UN General Assembly resolution also called for all Israeli nuclear facilities to be inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA.
Israel is believed to have hundreds of nuclear weapons. These weapons pose a serious threat to the security of the entire Middle East.
Although 191 countries, including Iran, have so far signed the NPT, Israel has yet to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
