The height of Mount Everest has changed. This time we have to change a lot of information about Everest in the geography textbook. Nepal and China have been at odds for years over the height of the highest peak in the world. At a joint press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday, the two countries announced that the height of Mount Everest is 646.6 meters (29,031.69 feet). This means that the height of Everest has increased by 0.6 meters compared to the previous calculation.
A recent survey by the Survey of India in 1954 showed the recent height of Everest. At that time, the height of Everest was known to be 8,648 meters (29,26 feet). Although Nepal never measured the height of Everest, it followed the Survey of India calculations. After a devastating earthquake in 2015, the Nepalese government said that Everest had risen. Since then, Nepal has sent a team to China to measure the height of the summit. In 2019, the prime ministers of the two countries announced the joint efforts of Kathmandu and Beijing. Previously, China had declared the height of Everest in 1985 and 2005. Twice as high as China, Everest measured 748.13 meters and 744.43 meters, respectively.
Announcing the new height of Everest yesterday, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gayali said in a video call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that Everest is a symbol of the eternal friendship between Nepal and China. Source: PTI.
