The people of the country, especially the people of the south of the country, are about to fulfill their dreams by constantly struggling with the strong currents and waves of Pramatta Padma. There are only 72 hours or three days left to fulfill the dream of this huge population. If all goes well, stretch No. 41 will be located at the Padma bridge, the country’s largest infrastructure under construction, by December 10. With this, the work of the main infrastructure of the Padma Bridge of Dreams will be completed. The Padma Bridge will be visible with a total length of 6.15 km. This information has been known from the relevant sources.

According to the source, a total of 41 spans in 42 piers will be completed after 150 meters on the main river. Each pillar has a total of 252 stacks of 6. However, due to the soil structure at the bottom of the river and the intensity of the current, the design has been changed and some pillars have been placed at the Mawa end of the bridge over 6 piles. Overcoming all the complexities, discussions, criticisms, problems, uncertainties, the Padma Bridge has stood in front of the difficult but happy reality. All work on the Padma Bridge will be completed within 12 months from December 10.
By the way, the Padma Bridge is a multi-purpose road and rail bridge under construction on the Padma River in Bangladesh. Through this, Shariatpur and Madaripur will be connected with Lohajang de Munshiganj. This will connect the northeast part with the southwestern part of the country. For a developing country like Bangladesh, the Padma Bridge is one of the most challenging construction projects in history. The two-level concrete and steel bridge has a four-lane road at the top and a single rail at the bottom. The largest bridge in the country has been built in the Padma-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin with 41 spans of 150 meters in length and a length of 6,150 kilometers and a width of 18.10 meters. The total land required and acquired for this is 916 hectares.
In 2010, the World Bank withdrew its promise of funding after some people involved in the preparation of the Padma Bridge project came up with reports of corruption. Later, other donors followed suit. The corruption allegations were later proven false. Subsequently, a Canadian court dismissed the case for lack of evidence. Currently, the project is financed from the Government of Bangladesh’s own resources. Construction of the ‘Padma Multipurpose Bridge’, a multipurpose socio-economic development project on the Padma River, was supposed to start in 2011 and be completed in 2013. The interim government planned the main project. On August 26, 2008, the provisional government approved the much-discussed Padma Bridge project worth Tk 10,161 million rupees. Later, the Awami League government came and connected the railways and on January 11, 2011, in the first phase, the cost of the bridge was revised to Tk 20,506 crore. Later, the cost of the Padma Bridge was increased by another Rs 8 billion Tk. As a result, the total cost of the Padma bridge is Tk 28,793 crore.
According to sources, the proposed Padma Multipurpose Bridge project will connect the southwestern part of the country with the center of the country through a specific route through the Mawa-Jajira point. This bridge will contribute significantly to the social, economic and industrial development of the relatively underdeveloped region. The project will directly benefit more than 3 million people in 29 percent of the total area of Bangladesh. As a result, the project is being considered as a very important infrastructure for the country’s transportation network and regional economic development. The bridge will feature a future expansion of railways, gas, power lines and fiber optic cables. If the bridge is launched, the country’s total GDP will rise up to 1.2 percent.
The bridge is being built by China Major Bridge Company under China Railway Group Limited. 30 thousand 693 crore 39 lakh taka are spent on it.
In July 2019, rumors spread on Facebook social media that people would be involved in the construction of the Padma Bridge. This led to the kidnapping of many mentally unbalanced people in different parts of Bangladesh and handed them over to the police. Later, on July 9, 2019, the bridge construction authority sent a notification to the media stating that the incident was rumored and unfounded. In this case, the investigators also advised the bridge authorities to spread all the details of the bridge’s construction to the public.
On September 30, 2016, the first span was installed at Pillars 37 and 38 of the Padma Bridge at Jajira Point in Shariatpur. The Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, officially announced the installation of the section at 10:30 a.m. that day. Since then, construction works have continued to ignore the strong current of the river in the rainy season, overcoming the complexity of the formation of the soil layer at the bottom of the river.
It is known that the color of the Padma Bridge will be golden in the style of Bangabandhu’s Bengal dream. However, the red and green lights in the shape of the national flag of Bangladesh will be lit on the bridge at night. Each span is placed 50 feet above the water level of the Padma River. Under the supervision of a team of experts from the Bangladesh Army, some 2,200 engineers and more than 4,000 workers from 14 countries, including China, have built this dreamy Padma Bridge.
According to bridge authorities, the bridge’s overall progress so far is 72.5 percent. However, it may take another year for the Padma Bridge infrastructure to be fully visible and for traffic to be ready with only one span remaining. The last 40th span was installed on the Padma Bridge on December 4. In addition to the section, other bridge works are also being carried out. According to the Department of Bridges, the progress in the implementation of the main bridge is 91 percent, the financial progress is 6.37 percent and the implementation of the link road and the service area is 100 percent.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has said that construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be completed in 2022. If the coronavirus epidemic and floods had not interrupted the work, it would have been completed in 2021. The Finance Minister said that a proposal was approved to extend the term of the river and main bridge governance supervision consultancy of the Padma bridge project for another 34 months. Although government spending has increased by Tk 348 crore a lakh 32 thousand, the cost of the project is not increasing. The coronavirus has turned everything upside down. The project has been hampered. I have extended the duration of this project until 2022. We hope that the project is already finished.
