The crane broke when lifting the girder of the bridge built on the Fauzdarhat-Bayezid highway in Chittagong. The girder of the upper bridge under construction on the Dhaka-Chittagong port railway line also collapsed at the time.
The incident took place in the Fauzdarhat Banglabazar area around 3:15 pm on Sunday. The upper bridge is being built by the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA).
CDA chief engineer Kazi Hassan bin Shams said they were all removed when the beam was raised. So no one was injured in the accident.
Shafiqul Islam, Inspector of the Fauzdarhat Police Post, said: “A 90-ton girder from the Fauzdarhat Upper Bridge fell from a crane on the railway while the girder was being installed. However, no casualties were reported at the time. We have reported the matter to the railway control room.
After receiving the news, the police from the Fauzdarhat outpost, the railway police, TI Rafiq and the local UP president Salauddin Aziz visited the site.
Nasir Uddin Didar, deputy project manager for Expectra Engineers Limited, who worked on the project, said: The beam weighs 90 tons and the two cranes 300 tons. We work with maximum security. No major incident has occurred.
The Bayezid Bostami to Fauzdarhat Ring Road was added according to CDA’s 1995 master plan to reduce traffic congestion and widen the road. In 1997, a two-lane highway project was undertaken. Work on the Tk 40 crore project was supposed to be completed in 1999. This was also done by cutting the hill and building the road. But the project was ruined due to various complications.
Later, another new project titled ‘Construction of Link Road from Dhaka Trunk Road to Bayezid Bostami Road including Loop Road on the outer periphery of the Asian University of Women’ was started to build Bayazid Bypass Road. The revised four-lane highway project worth Tk 320 million was approved by ECNEC in 2016.
