Those arrested by the police at the deposition
Inspired by statements by Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque and Faizul Karim, the under-construction sculpture of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized, the detainees told police in a statement.
Four people were arrested in the incident on Saturday night. They are- Teacher of the Jugia Paschimpara madrasa in the city of Kushtia. Al Amin (26) and Md. Yusuf Ali (26). Md. Student of the same madrasa. Abu Bakkar alias Mithun (19) and Md. Sabuj Islam Nahid (20).
The Khulna Division DIG, Dr. Khandaker Mohid Uddin, confirmed the information at a press conference held in the lobby of the Kushtia Police Super Office at noon.
Police said the two were first identified after seeing footage from CC. Madrasa student said after the police operation. Abu Bakkar alias Mithun from Shingpur in Mirpur upazila district of Bari and Md. Sabuj Islam Nahid was arrested in Philipnagar area of Daulatpur upazila district. They are both students from the Hefez department of Jugia Paschimpara Madrasa. They confessed to the police that they were involved in vandalizing the Bangabandhu sculpture.
In their statement they informed the police that they had destroyed the sculpture based on the statements of Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque and Faizul Karim. They also turned over the details of the vandalism to the police.
He said the two arrived at the sculpture facility walking along the Mazampur railway line in the city. Then, with the help of a ladder used in the construction of the sculpture, they got up around 2 a.m., smashed and damaged the sculpture with a hammer, and fled.
On Saturday morning they informed the Madrasa teachers Al Amin and Yusuf Ali about the incident. Those teachers helped them escape from the madrasa. Al-Amin and Yusuf were later arrested, according to the confessions of the detainees.
The Kushtia Model Police Station has filed a case in this regard. The defendants were sent to jail through court Sunday night. The return request will be made later. They will be subject to the law knowing if someone else is involved in the incident by sending them, police said at a news conference.
The press conference was attended by Additional DIG AKM Nahidul Islam, Police Superintendent SM Tanvir Arafat, Additional Police Superintendent Mostafizur Rahman and other senior police officials.
