China is the second country in the world to place its flag on the moon after more than 50 years. The National Aerospace Administration of China has released an image of its flag on the surface of the moon.
According to a BBC online report on Saturday, images of the flag on the lunar surface were taken with the camera of the Chinese spacecraft ‘Changi-5’ before returning with samples of the moonstones on Thursday.
During the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, the United States hoisted a country’s flag on the moon for the first time. Five more American flags were subsequently flown on the moon during various missions until 1962.
Citing satellite images, NASA said in 2012 that all five flags were still there, but experts thought they were more likely to turn white in the intense rays of the sun.
What has China said about the campaign?
The Chinese government daily Global Times reported that the Chinese flag recalled the “excitement and inspiration” felt during the US Apollo mission.
The Chinese flag is two meters wide and 90 centimeters long, Chinese astronaut Li Yunfeng, who led the project, told the Global Times. Chang’i-5 took soil and rock samples from the moon’s surface.
The Chinese flag was first seen on the surface of the moon in an image taken from China’s first Changi-3 spacecraft on the lunar mission. In 2019, the Changi-4 spacecraft was able to carry the Chinese flag on the dark surface of the moon.
But there was never a literal flag made of cloth. The Chinese flag painted on the surface of the spacecraft was photographed at the time. The Changi-5 mission is China’s third successful lunar mission in seven years.
