The criminals raised their pistols and fired two rounds of blank shots in front of the police in front of the shattered statue of Bangabandhu in Kushtia.
At around 6 p.m. on Saturday, a young man arrived in a minibus at the sculpture installation area at the intersection of Panchrasta, the busiest part of the city, and fired at Majampur Gate.
Additional police officers were subsequently deployed to the area. The incident was witnessed by SI Makshedur Rahman of Police Lines who was present there. But he couldn’t stop them.
SI Makchedur said he arrived in front of the sculpture around 3pm in professional service. Around 7:30 pm, a Noah car arrived. Empty shots were fired from inside the vehicle. The car had no license plate. The matter was immediately reported to senior police officials.
Three Bangabandhu sculptures are being built at a cost of Tk 3 million under the supervision of the municipality at the Kushtia city crossing. The work of one of them is almost finished. Meanwhile, criminals vandalized Bangabandhu’s sculpture around 2pm on Friday.
Police and some eyewitnesses said that around 8:30 pm, Noah’s car circled Bangabandhu’s sculpture twice, lowered the glass and fired a blank shot. They then quickly moved towards the Majampur area. Shortly after the incident, panic spread among the people in the busiest area. Additional police have been deployed to the scene.
Kushtia Model Police Station OC Abul Kalam said an investigation was underway to find out who caused the incident.
