Dhaka: Qaumi Gharana scholars have demanded a Shariah-compliant solution to the ongoing controversy over the construction of the sculpture of the Father of the Bangabandhu Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In this case, some of them have proposed to build a ‘Mujib Minar’ inscribed with the name of Allah instead of building a sculpture of Bangabandhu.
The proposal arose from a meeting of academics on the current instability in the country due to sculpture and the national crisis. The meeting was held at Jatrabari Madrasa in the capital on Saturday (December 5) morning and was attended by eminent academics from the country.
According to the sources of the meeting, the academics have made 5 proposals or decisions on the subject of sculpture. The Prime Minister will be informed about this in a letter shortly. At the same time, they have planned to meet with the Prime Minister and other senior officials.

The meeting was chaired by Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, Acting Chairman of the Qawmi Madrasa-Befaq Board of Education and Chairman of Al Hayatul Uliya Lil Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh. In his inaugural address, he sought a Sharia-compatible solution to the sculpture problem.
After the meeting, Maulana Mahfuzul Haque, Befaq’s secretary general, told reporters that eminent academics from all over the country participated in the meeting. 5 proposals have been accepted based on everyone’s opinion. They will be sent to the Prime Minister in the form of a letter. At the same time, a delegation will meet with the Prime Minister.
Maulana Mahfuzul Haque said that the manufacture of human figures or sculptures for any purpose is strictly prohibited in the eyes of Islam. In the country of 92% Muslims, in light of the faith and conscience of the people, it is better to look for an alternative better supported by the Quran and Sunnah.
Responding to a question about what alternative thinking is, Mahfuzul Haque said: “Our proposal is to build a Mujib Minar with 99 names of Allah.” However, he also said that Mujib Minar was not mentioned in the five-point proposal.
According to sources, the gathering of scholars made a clear decision in the context of sculpture that the manufacture of human figures and sculptures for any purpose is strictly prohibited in Islam. It is not lawful to pay tribute to a great person or leader by placing idols or sculptures. This causes pain in the soul of the deceased Muslim. To pay tribute to someone and keep their memory alive, it is reasonable to look for a better alternative based on the Qur’an and Sunnah in light of the beliefs and conscience of 92% of people without erecting idols or sculptures.
