Rajshahi: The marriage ceremony has been completed for Dilip Khalko, 30, who has been held in Rajshahi Central Jail for eight years for a rape case. The prison authorities married the raped woman to Karafat on Saturday (December 5) afternoon by order of the higher court.
His eight-year-old son was also present at the time.
In 2012, a court sentenced Dilip, a prisoner at Rajshahi Central Jail, to life in prison.
More recently, Dilip’s attorney filed for bail in the superior court. The raped woman (22) told the court that they both agreed to marry. He has nothing to object to the granting of bail to the defendant. After the bail hearing, the court ordered Karafat to marry them. After that, the marriage ceremony for Dilip, who was being held in Rajshahi Central Jail, was completed on Saturday afternoon.
Prisoner Dilip Khalko’s home is in Godagari upazila village, Chaitanyapur Vikarpara. He is the son of Sitanath Khalko from that village. At least 14 members of the two families, including the bride, went to jail for their wedding. Members of the local Parishad Union (UP) were present and were accompanied by the 8-year-old son of a rape victim.
Members of the two families, including the bride, were pushed towards the jail door when they arrived at the front of the jail. The Hindu marriage registrar Krishna Devi and the priest Parimal Chakraborty were already present there.

The prison’s chief superintendent, Subrata Kumar Bala, said: “The High Court has ordered us to complete Dilip’s marriage. The two parties were called after receiving a copy of the order three days ago. So today the formality of the marriage ended without problems. The marriage papers will be sent to the superior court soon.
Meanwhile, Dilip and Victim are cousins. The two had a love story. On this basis, Dilip had sexual relations with the victim on February 25, 2011, promising to marry her. The victim became pregnant. But since then, Dilip has not agreed to marry. There was a delay in the arbitration of the matter.
As there was finally no arbitration meeting, the victim underwent a medical examination on October 23 of that year. He then appeared at the Godagari Police Station on October 25 and filed a lawsuit against Dilip for rape.
Charges were brought against the defendants in the case on January 29, 2012 at the Court for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children in Rajshahi. Following the trial, the court sentenced Dilip to life imprisonment and fined him 50,000 taka on June 12 of that year.
The victim was 14 years old when she was raped. But at that age a child approached him. The girl no longer studied. After finishing seventh grade, this girl from the indigenous Christian community started a new life as a farm worker. His children grow day by day. His son is now eight years old. Dilip has also been incarcerated for eight years. After so long, the two families have reached an agreement. Now that the marriage documents have reached the higher court, Dilip will be released from jail after completing the legal process.
