Shamsul Haque, general secretary of the Manabbandhan River and Environmental Development Council, said hundreds of facilities have been built occupying the banks of the Banshi River and the river from Fulbaria in Savar to Nayarhat. Occupancy is highest in the Savar Namabazar area. There are at least three thousand illegal establishments on the market. A multi-story clothing factory in the Phulbaria area is roughly in the middle of the river. But the district and the Upazila administration are not taking any action to evict these establishments. Effective measures must be taken to regain the eastern course of the river by dislodging illegal settlements. Otherwise, the protest will continue.

Rafiqul Islam Mollah, chairman of the Council for River and Environmental Development, said the Banshi River occupant list, which was initially prepared by the administration, contained the names of 72 occupants, which was incomplete. Although small, the list includes the names of highly influential people, leaders of government parties and representatives of the people. Following the path of these influential people, ordinary people are also occupying the river by dumping garbage in the river. Despite the fact that the occupation process is going on openly, the local administration is far from taking action against the occupiers. “Although many influential establishments in the country have been evicted from the banks of the Buriganga, we do not understand why the eviction campaign was not carried out in Savar,” he said. Immediately, a full list of the Banshi River squatters should be prepared and their eviction arranged.
