The wife is busy with her mobile phone all the time. The husband is suspicious, the wife is in a relationship with someone else. He wanted to check his wife’s Facebook messenger for that suspicion. But the wife did not agree. After arguing about this, the husband finally filed for divorce with the city administration. Similarly, when he returned home late at night, his wife did not heat the curry, a man wanted to divorce his wife. Divorce filings are on the rise at Sylhet City Corporation (CSIC) due to minor accusations.

According to Sisik sources, the number of divorce filings in Sylhet has increased at an alarming rate this year. In 11 months, the number stood at 2,355, more than three times the total number of applications in the last three years. And eight times more than last year. Of these, 156 divorce requests were received on one day in June. Most of the applicants are women. Of these, two divorces went into effect after a separate hearing last November. With this, this year 21 divorces have been implemented.

When analyzing the applications submitted to CC, it was found that the majority of the applicants are in the age group of 30 to 40 years. The number of upper class and upper middle class is greater. The number of applications from lower middle class and lower class couples is lower. The applicants included couples in their 20s and 30s, most of whom were married for love. Couldn’t be self-sufficient next time. On the other hand, the family did not accept the marriage. The family does not run. On the one hand, there is financial stress, on the other hand, family pressure. In the end, these older people see forced divorce as a solution.

Again, couples in their 30s and 40s have different reasons for divorce. Among them are family quarrels, lack of time for each other, distrust, suspicion, extramarital affairs, spouses living abroad, excessive addiction to smartphones, drug addiction, physical disability, infertility, physical and mental abuse, loss of mutual interest, and personality conflicts. .

In the case of professional couples, the trend towards divorce has also increased at an alarming rate. A couple works for a private mobile service provider. Happiness did not last long in her married life despite financial prosperity. They have filed for divorce. In this case, the personality conflict has worsened. But in all cases the underlying cause is not the same. For example, a couple of doctors have filed for divorce. They also have a 9 year old boy. The husband is addicted to drugs. He spends all his income on drugs. He also often takes money from his wife by taking their son hostage. After many unsuccessful attempts to correct her husband, the wife finally chose the path of divorce. They officially divorced on October 28.

Corona also has an influence behind the alarming rise in divorce rates in Sylhet. Experts say the loneliness of longtime husbands and wives under house arrest in Corona has increased the tendency for divorce due to bitterness and conflict. In some cases, the Corona situation has had a direct effect. According to an application submitted to the municipal corporation, the husband lives in Jhalokati and the wife lives in Sylhet. The husband became involved in extramarital affairs in Jhalakati. But that was a secret. But when he reached Sylhet due to the Corona situation, he was unable to return due to the blockade. At first, the matter could be kept secret, but at one point it leaked. Because of this, his wife divorced him.

According to Sisik sources, a total of 2,355 divorce applications were received in the 11 months from January to November this year. This number is eight times the request from last year and more than three times the total number of requests submitted in the last three years. Last year 291 applications were received. And last year 746 divorce applications were filed.

The number of women seeking divorce has increased in the last two years. According to the Sisik Law Section, of the 299 applications in 2016, 24 were executed. Of these, 18 were applied by men and the remaining six were applied by women. Of the 256 divorce applications filed in 2016, 29 were valid, of which 18 were filed by women. In 2019, of the 291 divorce requests, 31 were effective. Of these, 16 applicants are women and the remaining 13 are men. That trend has continued this year as well. So far, most of the 21 divorce applications have been filed by wives.

Fazilatun Nesa Shapla, a counseling psychologist (part-time) at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, called the sudden increase in divorce filings a “shadow pandemic.” He said: “The reason behind the increase in divorce filings several times this year compared to last year is the impact of the coronavirus infection situation. It has affected the whole world. She added: “Husbands tend to stay away from home most of the time. Wives and children are used to living a kind of life. Mutual disputes, conflicts and bitterness are increasing in house arrest in Corona now. From this many people are walking down the path of divorce.

Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said: ‘We have received a large number of divorce applications. We always try to match them in any way. If a relationship survives, it is a great success. Because children are the most affected by divorce.
