Qatar won the 2022 World Cup second round and the 2023 Asian Cup Group E preliminary round 5-0 at Abdullah Al Khalifa Stadium in Dohar on Friday.
In the first leg, the team lost 2-0 to the organizers of the next World Cup on a heavy, rain-soaked field at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
The long road against Qatar became even longer. For the first time in the previous five matches, Bangladesh drew 1-1 in the 2006 Asian Cup qualifiers. They lost the next four matches 4-0, 4-1, 3-0 and 2-0 respectively.
There is a big difference between the two teams in terms of strength; Proof of this in the FIFA ranking. So did soccer on the field. The team, which is 125 positions ahead of Bangladesh, has been attacking from the beginning. They basically attacked with two edges. It has been more on the left side.
Abdel Karim’s powerful shot went over the crossbar in the third minute. In the next minute, Akram Hasan Afif’s cross hit the post off Ahmed Aladdin’s head and Bangladesh survived.
But this relief did not last long. In the ninth minute, Abdel Aziz’s shot from a teammate’s cut hit a defender and changed direction.
Mahbubur Rahman Sufil, who was playing as the sole forward, did not receive much of the ball from his teammates. No test of the opposing goalkeeper could be made. Bangladesh took the first corner in the 26th minute, but nothing happened.
Qatar doubled the lead in the 31st minute. Akram Afif made room and passed the goalkeeper with a corner kick. Ziko, who made his debut for the national team in the first friendly match against Nepal, blocked a shot in the last minute.
Aladdin got the ball in the 55th minute, forgetting about Riyadul Hasan Rafi. But he couldn’t make the correct shot. This forward shot was returned by Zico Corner. In the 64th minute, Zico jumped a long shot and returned it.
Bangladesh’s hopes of turning back were nearly dashed when Bipolu Ahmed fouled Moed Hasan in box D in the 70th minute. Al Moyes finds direction by tapping Zico’s hand as he leaps over Ali’s kick line.
After a while, Tapu Varman sat down to catch a player’s cross in his own net. Fortunately, the ball went out of its way down the far post.
The Bangladesh coach took Sufil and gave life to Nabib Newaz in the 84th minute.
Four minutes later, Abdel Aziz passed the ball to Almoyez Ali while his teammate’s long ball was in the air. This forward increases space by pushing with his chest. In the second minute of added time, Afif scored his second goal and the score 5-0 with a corner kick from inside the D-box.
Qatar leads the group with five wins from six games and 18 points from a draw.
Bangladesh is at the bottom with 1 point in a tie in five games.
