Police thwarted an anti-sculpture procession in the capital’s Purana Paltan. Attempts were made to hold a procession against the sculptures in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Friday prayers. When they began chanting slogans against the sculptures, the police charged with batons. The procession dispersed.
A large number of policemen had been deployed to the Baitul Mukarram-Paltan-Kakrail area before Friday prayers.
Motijheel Zone ADC Enamul Haque Mithu said that all meetings without prior permission are prohibited. Today (Friday) we already had knowledge of the procession. Suddenly, a group of devotees left Baitul Mukarram after the prayers and dispersed.
In a press release signed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Shafiqul Islam on Wednesday, it was reported that legal action would be taken if any program including procession, gathering and assembly is taken without permission.
The statement further said that it has recently been noticed that various social, political and religious organizations are announcing public gatherings, rallies and gatherings in the Dhaka metropolitan area without the permission of the proper authorities. Due to various obstacles in the way of carrying out these programs, the movement of vehicles and people is being interrupted.
