Police filed a charge sheet against eight people in a gang rape case of a girl at Sylhet MC College. Six defendants have been charged with direct rape; The other two are assistants. A charge sheet has also been filed against the eight in another case in which the victim is allegedly beaten and abducted.

Shahparan Investigative Officer and Police Inspector (Investigation) Indranil Bhattacharya presented the charge sheet at Sylhet Metropolitan Chief Magistrate (CMM) Abul Kashem’s court on Thursday morning.

The eight people against whom charges have been brought are Saifur Rahman, Tarekul Islam Tareq and Shah Mohammad. Mahbubur Rahman alias Rony, Arjun Laskar, Md. Ainuddin, Mizbaul Islam alias Rajan, Rabiul Hasan and Mahfuzur Rahman alias Masum. The first six have been raped. Rabiul Hasan and Mahfuzur Rahman assisted in the rape and destroyed the evidence of the rape. All of these eight were associated with the politics of the Chhatra League. They are all in jail.

Meanwhile, the eight have been charged in the case of snatching a gold necklace, earrings and two thousand rupees from the victim’s neck on the day of the incident. Police filed a separate charge sheet in the case in court yesterday.

The girl (21) was gang-raped in the dormitory of MC College in Sylhet on the night of September 25. Her husband was detained in the bedroom at the time. That night, the husband of the rape victim presented a case. Saifur Rahman, Tarekul Islam, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam, Shah Mohammad, party activist. Mahbubur Rahman alias Shah Rony and Mahfuzur Rahman alias Masum were named as defendants in the case. Two or three more people were charged outside of the statement. Subsequently, the police and the RAB arrested a total of eight fugitives. Misbaul Islam alias Rajan and Ainuddin, who were not named in the statement, were arrested as suspects. The eight detainees were detained in various stages. They later testified in court under section 164.

On October 1 and 3, DNA samples were collected from six defendants over two days. After collecting samples at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, they were sent to the Dhaka Lab. From there, the sample test report reaches the court first. Later it passed into the hands of the investigator.

In early November 22, the police filed a charge sheet against defendants Saifur Rahman and Shah Mahbubur Rahman alias Rony in a case under the Gun Act. On the night of the incident, the police raided the room occupied by the main defendant, Saifur Rahman, in the dormitory of MC College and recovered firearms. The police brought a case against Saifur under the Gun Law. Shah Mohammad with Saifur later in the case. Mahbubur Rahman aka Rony was charged.

The investigator of the case said that during the investigation a total of 49 witnesses have been taken. The evidence against the accused has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
