Nagorno-Karabakh clashes kill some 3,000 Azerbaijani soldiers

During the Armenian-Azerbaijani war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, 2,783 Azerbaijani soldiers were killed and more than 100 were reported missing.

The six-year war ended in 1994, but no peace treaties were ever signed between them. Although the area is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, it is controlled by ethnic Armenians in support of the Armenian government.

Armenia has not yet released the final death toll of its military, but an Armenian official confirmed on November 14 that 2,318 soldiers had been killed. Dozens of civilians on both sides were also killed in the clashes.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he will visit Azerbaijan on December 9-10. This is the first visit by a foreign minister to Baku since the ceasefire.

A statement from Ankara on Tuesday said Turkey and Russia had agreed to observe a ceasefire in Karabakh from a joint peacekeeping center. But Turkish officials say the joint peacekeeping center should be at a designated location in Azerbaijan.

The war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which began on September 26 this year, can be described as the most recent war in the world today. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in the more than century-long Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. The two countries have previously clashed over control of Nagorno-Karabakh. Al Jazeera.
